Glucosamine is a naturally occurring chemical compound classified as an amino sugar. It serves as a building block for various structures in our body, but is primarily known for creating and maintaining adequate nourishment for articular cartilage. Glucosamine is often used in both the treatment and prevention of joint damage and conditions such as osteoarthritis, articular cartilage degeneration, and recovery from injuries and contusions.

Chondroitin is a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of many connective tissues, including cartilage, bone, skin, ligaments and tendons. It is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body. It is the main component of cartilage, the hard connective tissue that cushions the joints. Chondroitin helps keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (especially water) into the connective tissue. It can also block enzymes that break down cartilage and provides the body with the building blocks to produce new cartilage. A large body of research suggests that chondroitin may be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a type of arthritis characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage due to trauma or degeneration through excessive use of cartilage.
